The Santa Cruz Valley Union High School commencement was held Thursday, May 23 at 8 p.m. on Townsend Field to honor the of 62 members of the 2013 graduating class.
This 63rd annual event was begun with the Santa Cruz High School Band performing the processional “Pomp and Circumstance.”
Master of ceremonies Elizabeth Ashley Flores welcomed everyone, and Betty Vazquez led those assembled in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Perfecto Rodriguez gave the Opening Reflection, and then Guadalupe Arredondo gave the same comments in Spanish. Marina Turner welcomed everyone and introduced this year’s salutatorian, Yvonne Eicher. She gave an encouraging, and reflective speech using both humor and some serious tones to address her audience. Eicher said that the valedictorian was unable to speak, due to unforeseen circumstances.
Student Michael Duran introduced Commencement Speaker Richard S. Carino, who congratulated and encouraged students. Carino, himself a Santa Cruz Grad, encouraged the students to continue with their success, and to give back.
Principal Orante Jenkins spoke of graduation wishes to the Class of 2013, and Superintendent Charie Wallace presented the Class of 2013. Governing Board President Paul Rodriguez, Vice President Jo Anne Galindo, and Board members Elizabeth Flores, Thomas Gil, and Richard Reyes presented the diplomas.
The closing reflection was given by K’leigha Jones with Noe Tarango repeating it in Spanish.
Students moved onto the field to greet their family and friends amid tears and cheers in a celebration of their achievement.
