A Casa Grande teen died Saturday after sustaining injuries in a Friday evening auto crash south of the city.
Albert Arias, 17, died at Maricopa Medical Center, according to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office.
Arias had been taken to Phoenix by air ambulance after a 6:24 p.m. collision near ChuiChu and Peters roads.
Sheriff’s Office spokesman Elias Johnson said a 2006 GMC pickup, driven by Felipe Urias, ran a stop sign and hit a 1987 Ford Bronco that Arias was driving.
Urias was driving east on Peters Road, Johnson said, at what police estimate was an excessive rate of speed.
Arias’s Bronco struck a utility pole during the crash, resulting in his injuries, the Sheriff’s Office press release stated. He was driving north.
Arias was a senior at Vista Grande High School and was in his third year as a member of the Casa Grande Police Department’s Youth Explorer Program. He was reportedly preparing for a career in law enforcement.
“Albert was such a great student and was very active in the school’s JROTC program,” said Colleen Wilhite, Vista Grande administrative assistant.
The crash remains under investigation, Johnson said.
Urias was cited and arrested Feb. 22 by the Sheriff’s Office for criminal speed for driving 85 mph in a 50 mph zone.
