The gridiron gang from Coolidge High School recorded its fourth win of the season last Friday, in a 38-16 win over Phoenix South Pointe.

It was more than a victory for the Bears, who also celebrated senior night in honor of the seniors’ last football game at Larry Delbridge Stadium.

The victory broke a three-game losing streak, which had hindered the Bears (4-5) who currently stand at No. 14 in the power rankings.

The Bears had a balanced attack over the Griffins (0-9) finishing with 355 yards of total offense, 90 of which came through the air.

Quarterback Justin Rico finished three of four in the air, throwing one interception and a 67-yard screen to Colt Marley for a touchdown. Rico also punched in the first score of the night, on a five-yard keeper.

On the ground, Tone Hooker and Seth Ellis controlled the field, both finishing with over 100 yards apiece and three touchdowns between them.

The South Pointe offense moved the ball relatively well throughout the contest, but were unable to convert, as small penalties and lost possessions plagued them through the evening.

Bear defensive backs were busy, as they intercepted four Griffins passes and recovered one fumble, and only giving the Griffins one freebie.

Both ends were clicking for the Bears, as they controlled most of the contest throughout the evening. One mishap, with 13 seconds left in the third quarter, came after the Bears allowed the Griffins to return a punt 67 yards for a score.

The Griffins went on to score one more touchdown in the remaining seconds of the fourth quarter, capping off the evening.

Due to penalties, both squads had a touchdown called back, and were unable to convert on drive following.

The Bears are currently seeking a playoff spot, pending the outcome of this week’s action against Santa Cruz (3-6) in Eloy. Currently, a four-way tie remains for first place, with Blue Ridge, Empire, Estrella Foothills and Fountain Hills with 55 power points each.

In the last week of regular season action, Friday will reveal playoff berths for the top 16 teams in the 3A South region.

Currently at 14, the Bears will need a win this Friday to strengthen playoff hopes.

Kickoff in Eloy will be as normal at 7 p.m.
