Howard Waggner/Maricopa Monitor, Maricopa Police Honor Guard members are seen participating in a Sept. 11 ceremony at Maricopa Elementary School. The MPD Honor Guard was selected this week to particpate in the Fort McDowell Fiesta Bowl Parade in January.

The Maricopa Police Department announced this week that the MPD Honor Guard was selected to carry the American Flag in January at the 39th annual Fort McDowell Fiesta Bowl Parade.

The Honor Guard, which is made up of five MPD officers, will lead the nationally-televised parade, which begins at 11 a.m. on Jan. 2.

Maricopa police spokesman Sgt. Stephen Judd said the mission of the Honor Guard was to remember those lost in the line of duty.

“All of the members have a strong commitment to this country, state, city, department, and fellow officers and vow to always remember those who have given their all in the line of duty,” he said.

According to Judd, MPD’s Honor Guard unit was selected by the Fiesta Bowl Parade committee out of a large pool of applicants.
